From the website:

The Yagua story is one of Cuba from the 1940s. The cigar was inspired by a story J.C. Newman PENSA’s General Manager, Lazaro Lopez, shared with Drew Newman (Fourth Generation Owner, J.C. Newman Cigar Company) over dinner in Esteli, Nicaragua.

“At our family farm, my grandfather would take fresh tobacco leaves from the curing barns and roll cigars without any molds or presses. In an attempt to give his cigars a traditional shape, he would tie a handful of them together using pieces of the Cuban royal palm tree, known as the yagua. When he was ready to enjoy his personal cigars, he untied the bundle. He loved how every cigar had its own unique shape. I still remember the rich aroma and taste of my grandfather’s cigars. Today, I’ve recreated Yagua, rolling them exactly how my grandfather did a century ago.”

Because the cigars are pressed together and bound while they are still wet, each one has a slightly different shape. With a blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos, these cigars offer a rich smooth flavor.

The Yagua is a unique cigar with great flavors and complexity. A medium strength cigar made in Nicaragua blended with a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and fillers. With the special packaging technique of bundling them by wrapping each bundle with a Cuban Palm Leaf (from the Yagua tree), each cigar looks and feels different. These are considered a 6 X 54 Toro, and all offer a triple cap perfect for any cut you choose - I chose the Colibri Deep V Cutter.

Upon cut, the cold draw was notes of raisin and earth. Wrapper is a dark brown, toothy finish. Cap was a little loose after cut but did not take away from the enjoyment of this cigar.

After light up, burn was a little wavy and needed touched up three times. Ash was solid, albeit a bit flaky. Nice slow burning cigar with thick rich, and oily, smoke output.

Where this cigars shines for me is in the flavor notes!

The first third offers notes of prune, creamy light brown sugar and molasses, a bit of earth, oily sweetness, and a touch of white pepper lingering on the tongue and lips, yet fades quickly.

The second third has flavors of light barnyard (hay), creamy light molasses, sweet plum, hint of floral, and the pepper note drops off.

Getting into the #FinalThird, notes of sweet plum, rich creamy light brown sugar, and baking spices prevail with a nice finish of cayenne pepper lingering on the tongue and through the retrohale.

Great flavor complexity!

The Yagua has good construction with nice smoking characteristics. The cigar had me in deep thought as to the flavors I was tasting. I enjoyed this cigar immensely as it made me think and brought back memories of flavor combinations I seldom get in cigars.

The burn had some wave to it, causing three burn touch ups, but it really didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the cigar and just solidified the unique process of these had-rolled, farm-fresh cigars!

In the end, I gave the JC Newman - Yagua a Final Third Cigar rating of 91. With this being a very limited release, only 1,000 boxes made, do yourself a favor and get out and grab a couple to smoke!
