The Henry Clay LE 2018 is a medium to full strength cigar from the Dominican Republic. Coming in one size, the 5.7 X 52 Perfecto, this cigar is blended using a Habano 2000 wrapper, Criollo ‘98 binder, and fillers from Honduras and Nicaragua.
Good construction with a closed cap and foot. I used the Colibri Deep V Cut on the cap and took off about an 1/4” from the foot tip to allow cold draw flow and a smoother light up.
Cold draw was mostly barnyard with a hint of spice.
Getting into the flavor notes, the first third had notes of hay, charred nut, with black pepper lingering on the tongue.
Second third presented dark caramel, toast, with the same blacker pepper left lingering on the tongue.
The #FinalThird developed into notes of bitter black coffee, baking spices, earth, and a bit more spice that remained on the palate and through the retrohale.
The flavors were nice and similar as one would expect from a medium to full cigar from the DR.
The second third was where the cigar seemed to be at its best with the smoking characteristics. The first and final third had many burn issues which resulted in 3 major burn touch ups.
The cigar had a very nice draw and good smoke output. Strength picked up toward the final third making this a solid medium-full strength cigar!
All in all, this was a pretty good cigar that I had not smoked before. Even with the issues stated above, I still enjoyed this cigar and would smoke it again.
I gave the Henry Clay LE 2018 a Final Third Cigar rating of 84. This one was enjoyable but lost a few points due to the poor burn line and burn touch-ups.
