The Aladino Corojo Reserva is a full strength, complex Honduran cigar constructed from wrapper to filler with Honduran Corojo - JRE’s specialty! And it did not disappoint! I smoked the 6 X 52 Toro, and used my Colibri Deep V Cutter on the nice solid triple cap.
The construction was beautiful with a matte brown Corojo wrapper that was near perfect, and a bit toothy, with the texture having a couple very minimal soft spots.
The cold draw had notes of cinnamon (the baking spice, not candied) and mild cocoa. Upon light up the burn line was even, but had a bit of a tight draw. This opened up quickly and after a few puffs the draw was perfect. Smoke output was perfect as well with thick, rich, billowing smoke!
And now on to the flavor journey…buckle up!
The first third had notes of bitter dark chocolate, earth, wheat toast (I could almost say white toast), and black pepper lingers on the palate and through the retrohale. Beautiful start!
The second third got interesting with the same wheat toast, light earth, bitter dark chocolate, and light spice, but with the retrohale, I picked up light sassafras root and roasted nut! That took me a minute to figure out that flavor note! Like a nice sassafras tea finish!
In the #finalthird another new note came forward in a big way - buttered toast! Where it was simply toast in first two thirds, a nice rich buttery note was added to the toast - had me craving some good old buttered white toast after that stick! Still had the nice note of sassafras, but an addition of baking spices, light roast coffee, and the similar notes of sassafras and black pepper lingering on the palate and through the retrohale.
Whew! What a journey! I have been singing the praises of the Cameroon for a while now, only having one of these Corojo Reservas to date before this one, but sitting down and focusing on every aspect of this cigar gave me an appreciation for what JRE is doing by not only creating new blends and cigars, but giving a nod to the past for some old blends they offered many years ago under another name! Their Corojo has always been that good!
After truly enjoying this cigar, I gave the JRE Tobacco Aladino Corojo Reserva a Final Third Cigar rating of 94. The only issue I had was a couple burn touch-ups at the beginning and end of the second third that would not catch up. Without those, I could easily see this being a 95!
I am looking forward to reviewing more cigars from JRE Tobacco as I truly enjoyed this cigar. Cameroon is up next, so we will finally see which one I like better and performs the best!
