The La Perla Habana - Classic Cameroon is a Nicaraguan made cigar, medium in strength, blended with a Cameroon wrapper, Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and fillers from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Honduras. I am smoking the 5.2 X 50 Robusto for this review from the August 2020 My Monthly Cigars Box.
Appearance was very nice and the construction was good as well - texture on the one I received was a little lumpy, but it is a hand made product. The double cap held tight with a straight cut with my Xikar XO Cutter.
Upon cut, the cold draw was sweet with notes of vanilla and milk chocolate - nice notes, not overly sweet.
After light up, the draw was snug, but after a 1/2” or so it opened up and settled in nicely, which also resulted in a flavor pop that brought a lot of complexity out of a relatively inexpensive cigar! Started off with a wavy burn line that corrected itself with no burn touch ups. Solid ash lasted well in the middle of the second third.
In the first third the flavors started off harsh with a bitter herb and earth note. After about 1/2” or so, once the draw opened up, the flavors came alive with added notes of toast and a lingering baking spice that builds to a pepper spice on the retrohale and lingers on the palate. This one had a nice, fast correction that gave me high hopes for this cigar!
The second third continued with baking spice and toast, adding notes of cinnamon spice, wood and white pepper that lingered on the palate.
The #finalthird is where this cigar began to shine for me. The flavor notes meld well together with individual notes of buttery toast, cinnamon spice, baking spices, light pepper, and a smooth, creamy, and slightly spicy, retrohale. Black pepper builds toward the end of the final third, which I enjoyed very much!
Flavors lingered for a long finish well after each puff.
That final third brought me back to when I was a kid and my mom would toast white bread, butter it up and add cinnamon and sugar to it. I guess I know what I am making after I get done with this review…
At a $7.50 MSRP, this will be a cigar I will smoke as often as possible. I’ve smoked many cigars at twice that price that didn’t come close to the enjoyment I received from smoking this stick!
In the end, there were a couple construction issues, an early tight draw and wavy burn at light up, which I could easily see adding a few points to the final score. Even so, I gave this La Perla Habana - Classic Cameroon a Final Third Cigar Rating of 88. Without those early issues, I would say this would be a 91-92 easily! Only smoking one, I may have received one that doesn’t line up with the rest of this blend, but these are hand made products and will have an issue every once in a while. And that doesn’t change the fact that I will be buying more of these to smoke soon! After that first inch, this cigar impressed me, and I loved every last minute of this 90 minute smoke (for me, a relatively slow smoker)!
