I first smoked the Unkind last year when I bought a box of them in Northern Indiana. The first time I had seen this brand in brick and mortars, I smoked the “Raven” in their shop and was so impressed I bought the box. At that time it was still called the Raven, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, the name was changed to Unkind - a group of Ravens is called an Unkindness!

Blackbird Cigar Co - Unkind Cigar Review:

The Unkind is a cigar made in the Dominican Republic blended beautifully by Jonas Santana with a Brazilian Cubra wrapper, a binder from the DR, and fillers consisting of Criollo 98, HBA, Corojo, and PA tobaccos.

I smoked the 5 X 50 Robusto and used my Xikar XO Straight Cutter on the solid triple cap.

Upon first inspection, the wrapper was a nice deep brown color with an oily sheen and just a bit of tooth. Texture was a bit hard, and cold draw was tight, but with a partially closed foot I expected that. Flavor notes at cold draw are earth, tobacco and a touch of chocolate.

Once lit, the draw was perfect and the burn line was razor sharp. I had one burn touch up in the first third and another in the second third, but the slight touchup kept the burn line even the rest of the cigar. The cigar had solid white ash that fell off in two large chunks. Nice thick and rich smoke output.

The first third began this flavor journey with light pepper, rich leather, walnut, and a lingering orange zest! What an amazing start!

The second third ramped up the flavor complexity with the introduction of creamy caramel and vanilla, along with the lingering orange zest, leather, and a bit of pepper on the retrohale. What I really love is the orange zest remains on the palette for a while after the other flavors fade a bit.

The #finalthird stayed complex with notes of caramel, vanilla, lightly roasted walnut, orange zest, and a bit of mild pepper on the retrohale.

Whew, what a journey!

The Unkind is a cigar that will keep you interested throughout and will give your senses plenty to think about as you enjoy this 90-minute plus smoke. Blackbird Cigar Co has some of the most unique blends and the Unkind compliments the entire line well. The Cubra wrapper is unique and what I feel brings along the complexity of the flavor profile and the lingering orange zest in each puff.

At the end of this cigar (and it was a sad ending because I wanted another hour or more to enjoy) I gave the Blackbird Cigar Co - Unkind a Final Third Cigar rating of 94! An incredible cigar that would’ve rated even higher if not for the slight deductions for a couple of burn touchups and harder texture. These didn’t take away from the enjoyment of this cigar at all, but I could see this at a 96 plus for this cigar without those deductions, These are hand-rolled cigars, after all, so this is not uncommon at all.

As I have said, you need to do yourself a favor and try all of the Blackbird Cigars, you will be glad you did!
